Job summary

Root is seeking a Staff Data Scientist to lead the ongoing development of our customer lifetime value ecosystem. This is a hands-on data science role with technical leadership to guide models, deployment, and production support across the US.

You will shape priorities, collaborate across Marketing, Finance, Product, and Customer Experience, and mentor other data scientists and ML engineers while delivering high-impact business insights.

Qualifications

• BS, MS, or PhD in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
• 8+ years of experience delivering complex, high‑impact data science and production ML work.
• Strong command of statistical methods, predictive modeling, time‑series forecasting, experimental design, measurement, and validation, with deep expertise in survival analysis.
• Deep expertise in Python and SQL, with strong software engineering discipline and maintainable code.
• Experience designing, deploying, and operating systems of interacting production models and pipelines.
• Ability to frame ambiguous modeling problems, evaluate tradeoffs, and prioritize high‑leverage opportunities.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills to connect technical work to business goals.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction of LTV modeling.
• Improve models that drive major decisions across conversion, retention, and claims.
• Keep a complex codebase healthy with modular, tested, and scalable workflows.
• Stay hands‑on across the lifecycle: analysis, feature development, modeling, deployment, and monitoring.
• Measure what matters: design experiments and validate model performance and business impact.
• Plan quarterly and long‑term priorities with the team manager and address risks.
• Bridge modeling and engineering to ship reliable models and explain risks to leaders across functions.
• Coach data scientists and ML engineers to raise quality and standards.
