Lead Custodian and Maintenance Worker
Job Description
The Lead Custodian and Maintenance Worker is a key member of the facilities team, responsible for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and safety on campus. This role combines hands-on custodial work with supervisory duties, including overseeing and mentoring custodial staff, assigning tasks, and ensuring efficient maintenance and cleaning operations. The individual is expected to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks as part of the team.
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), non-exempt position, typically scheduled Monday to Friday from 12:30 PM to 9:30 PM, with occasional flexibility for morning and afternoon shifts, and some weekend overtime during school events. The role reports to the Director of Operations & Technology or the Head of School designee.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate daily custodial and maintenance activities, assigning tasks and providing guidance to ensure timely completion.
- Oversee campus facilities, grounds, and equipment, ensuring proper cleaning, maintenance, and organization.
- Collaborate with the Facilities Team to prioritize maintenance needs.
- Train custodians in proper cleaning procedures.
- Monitor work orders and ensure prompt completion of repairs and maintenance.
- Handle onsite repairs such as plumbing, electrical, and furniture assembly.
- Delegate tasks or coordinate with external vendors as needed.
- Manage waste disposal and perform custodial tasks including cleaning classrooms, bathrooms, and common areas.
- Conduct deep cleaning and maintenance projects regularly.
- Maintain external walkways and sand pits.
- Report repairs or safety hazards to administration.
- Ensure compliance with sanitation standards and biohazard regulations.
- Respond to emergencies to mitigate hazards.
- Foster a positive work environment, encouraging team pride and high-quality work.
- Organize and shelve supplies, maintain inventory, and ensure equipment safety.
- Inspect campus for safety hazards and necessary repairs.
- Perform other tasks as needed.
Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- At least three years of custodial experience with increasing responsibility.
- Knowledge of custodial methods, materials, chemicals, and safety procedures.
- Strong supervisory and mentoring skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot facility issues.
- Experience coordinating a custodial team.
- Effective communication skills.
- Positive attitude, proactive, detail-oriented.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Proficiency in English; knowledge of Mandarin or Cantonese is a plus.
- Initiative to resolve facility issues independently.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to lift, push, or carry objects weighing 50 pounds or more, occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing, stooping, and crawling.
- Work in environments with odors, fumes, dust, noise, and other environmental factors.

Compensation
- Hourly pay from $26.50 to $29.00.
