Job summary

The COATS Company in La Vergne, TN, is seeking a Controls Engineer to lead the design, programming, integration, and continuous improvement of automation and controls systems across our manufacturing facility. You will own the full lifecycle of automation for welding, cutting, CNC, and coating lines, and work with a range of robots and PLC platforms.

Responsibilities include designing control panels and networking, performing safety assessments, troubleshooting downtime, and mentoring

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent hands-on experience.
5+ years in industrial controls engineering within manufacturing.
Hands-on programming with major PLC platforms.
Experience integrating robots in production.
Knowledge of electrical control systems, drives, sensors, and networking.
Familiar with safety standards ISO 10218/TS 15066, NFPA 79.

Responsibilities

Design, program, and commission PLC, HMI, and robot control systems for new and existing equipment.
Lead integration of industrial and collaborative robots into manufacturing cells, including end-of-arm tooling coordination, safety zoning, and cycle-time optimization.
Program, troubleshoot, and maintain controls across welding machines, laser/plasma cutting systems, CNC saws, CNC brake presses, powder coating equipment, and automated/manual assembly stations.
PLC logic, HMI screens, and robot programs across major platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi).
Create and maintain electrical schematics and controls documentation; provide mentorship to technicians and junior engineers.
