Bednark Studio is seeking a highly skilled Lead Carpenter to oversee the production of high-quality custom builds for special events, retail displays, and large-scale fabrication projects. This role requires an expert-level builder with strong leadership skills to guide a team of carpenters, fabricators, and apprentices, ensuring projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards.
As a Lead Carpenter, you will play a key role in three core areas: Production, Team Management, and Systems & Safety. You’ll work closely with Department Managers and Project Managers to plan, execute, and refine build strategies while fostering a collaborative and solution-oriented team environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Production & Fabrication:
- Interpret and execute complex technical drawings, providing insights to optimize fabrication strategies.
- Manage production schedules, prioritizing tasks to ensure timely project completion.
- Demonstrate mastery in joinery, hardware installation, cabinet-making, and finishing techniques.
- Oversee tool and material organization, ensuring all project elements are accounted for.
- Apply advanced knowledge of wood, metal, and plastic-based engineered sheet goods.
- Operate and maintain fabrication shop machinery, tools, and equipment.
- Enforce high craftsmanship standards, problem-solving build challenges as they arise.
- Attend project and engineering meetings, offering expert input on construction feasibility and techniques.
Team Management:
- Keeps the team focused and on task.
- Oversees daily operations of the team's assigned tasks and space.
- Tracks and stays within budgeted labor hours for each project.
- Manages daily tasks based on team members' skill sets, performance, and scheduling.
- Regularly checks in with the team for productivity, quality, and efficiency standards.
- Maintains knowledge of assigned projects' deliverables and appropriate onsite assembly/installation methods.
- Provides constructive feedback and direction to fabricators regarding their tasks.
- Fosters a positive, solution-oriented teamwork environment.
- Operates at a high level of professionalism, reliability, punctuality, and awareness.
Systems & Safety:
- Maintain clear and efficient communication channels through project management tools.
- Oversee material and hardware procurement in collaboration with the Purchasing Manager.
- Ensure workspace safety by upholding fabrication safety protocols and best practices.
- Regularly inspect and maintain tools, workspaces, and egress routes for safety compliance.
- Train and onboard new hires in safety standards, systems, and protocols.
- Assist in refining fabrication workflows to enhance productivity, organization, and efficiency.
- Follow projects through onsite installation as needed.
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
- 7+ years of professional carpentry and fabrication experience, with a strong portfolio of custom builds.
- Expertise in reading and interpreting blueprints, CAD drawings, and fabrication plans.
- Advanced proficiency with woodworking machinery, power tools, and finishing techniques.
- Strong understanding of structural integrity, construction methods, and in-line assembly processes.
- Proven leadership experience in a fabrication or production environment.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in a fast-paced production environment.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of general safety practices and OSHA compliance is required.
