Job summary

TEGNA Inc. is seeking a Broadcast Engineer Lead in Phoenix to drive innovation and maintain excellence across our broadcast and IT infrastructure. This pivotal role balances hands‑on engineering with strategic project leadership, owning system design decisions and setting local engineering standards.

You will lead complex projects, oversee 24/7 operations, mentor staff, and coordinate with corporate teams to ensure resilient, modern systems that meet business needs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, information technology, or a related field; equivalent professional experience also considered.
• Minimum 5 years in broadcast operations/technology with a proven track record of leading complex technical projects.
• Hands‑on experience with broadcast systems, networking, servers, and desktop support; knowledge of satellite, microwave, and IP news‑gathering technologies is highly preferred.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under high pressure, and communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, holidays and participate in an on‑call rotation to support a 24/7 news operation.

Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership & Ownership: Act as primary technical owner for key broadcast and IT systems; ensure reliability, scalability, and long‑term performance.
• Strategic Direction: Make independent decisions regarding system architecture and technical standards within corporate guidelines.
• Modernization: Identify opportunities for upgrades and roadmaps aligned with evolving business needs.
• Influence & Mentorship: Serve as the technical authority and mentor team members on direction and quality.
• End‑to‑End Project Management: Lead planning, design, and execution of major local, capital, and corporate engineering projects.
• Scope & Risk: Define project scope, approaches, sequencing, and risk mitigation for timely delivery.
• Systems Integration: Design and approve integration of studios, control rooms, transmission, automation, and DAM systems.
• Stakeholder Coordination: Liaise with engineering, vendors, IT security, and leadership to translate strategy into outcomes.
