Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Principal AV Behavior Safety Engineering Lead to define and execute the safety strategy for SAE Level 3–4 automated driving systems powered by machine-learning models. You will report into the AV Safety Strategy and Assurance organization and influence launch decisions for GM’s next generation of ADS products.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in machine learning, engineering, data science, or related field.
• 8+ years in autonomous vehicle or robotics development or related field.
• Demonstrated experience on production-intent AV programs.
• Technical safety leadership in AV development.
• Deep understanding of AV behavior development and evaluation.
• Experience applying AV safety standards like ISO 5083, ISO 21448 (SOTIF).
• Excellent communication; ability to influence cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Define GM's safety strategy for next-gen ADS architectures and validation.
• Own the behavior-focused portion of the ADS Safety Case with evidence.
• Collaborate with Software Validation, Embodied AI, Simulation, and Safety Metrics teams for end-to-end validation.
• Set strategy to break down ODDs and validate performance per behavior and in aggregate.
• Coordinate evaluation metrics, benchmarks, and safety launch targets for AV behaviors.
• Assess AV performance across safety and reliability using simulation, closed-course, and real-world data.
• Define and run assurance processes to verify sufficiency Criteria and safety targets for launch readiness.
