Job summary

Speechify is seeking a Team Lead for Android Core Product in Richmond, VA, with a strong hands-on leadership role and ownership of core features. You will guide architecture, reviews, and release cycles while ensuring reliability and performance of the Android stack.

You'll collaborate with Design and Product, drive continuous improvement, and mentor engineers across the team in a distributed environment that values speed and technical excellence.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on.
• Strong expertise in Kotlin and Android ecosystem, with modern architecture fundamentals.
• Proven experience with Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, and Clean Architecture.
• Experience shipping long-running background work and reliable Android components.
• Emphasis on testing, test strategy, and coverage, including JUnit-based tests.
• Track record of introducing durable improvements that outlast the author.
• Comfort with driving organizational changes and handling associated friction.
• Ability to design systems anticipating future changes and ensure reuse.
• Experience describing team workflows involving AI agents and automation.
• Product design sense, user empathy, and a drive to push Android UI/UX beyond spec.
• Self-motivation to improve app and codebase beyond the provided spec.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, collaborating with design from decision through release.
• Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
• Unblock the team when blockers arise and guide decisions.
• Drive version consistency when one implementation becomes the team standard.
• Keep shared components well-maintained, tested, and consolidating duplicates.
• Lead process changes when the team is ready, not before.
• Reduce manual release steps and streamline CI/CD pipelines.
• Address recurring issues by changing the underlying setup to prevent repeats.
• Shift verification left with automation to enhance QA readiness.
• Plan sprints so focus remains on undecided work rather than clearly defined tasks.
• Assess required review effort and formal sign-off points for areas.
• Engage in cross-functional discussions early, aligning with product and design.
• Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor early-career engineers, giving them meaningful work and learning time.
