Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an AI-focused engineer in the United States to define requirements, design, build, and operate end-to-end capabilities, including recognizing when AI is not the right solution. You’ll own the full lifecycle from discovery to deployment and operation, mentoring peers along the way.

You will lead client conversations, drive architecture decisions, and ensure governance, logging, and traceability. A senior, hands‑on role in a fast‑paced, government-facing context.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 1 year of hands-on experience building apps that integrate large language models, including prompt engineering and retrieval-augmented generation.
• Ability to own a capability end to end from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with metrics and test sets.
• Strong programming in Python, TypeScript or SQL across the full app.
• Lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• U.S. Citizenship required for assigned engagements.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders covering workflow, decision, and acceptance criteria.
• Define technical approach and defend the chosen AI pattern.
• Recommend simpler non-AI solutions when appropriate; improve interfaces and processes.
• Define measurable success criteria before building (accuracy targets, thresholds, etc.).
• Build complete capability end-to-end including prompts, retrieval, integration, and UI.
• Develop evaluation sets from real data and iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions balancing quality, cost, latency, and security.
• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, and traceability.
• Help clients understand possibilities and plan next phases.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code reviews and guidance.
• Maintain current knowledge of models and tooling for reusable patterns.
