Job summary

BigBear.ai is seeking a Lead AI Engineer to drive design, development, and deployment of generative AI and agentic systems for DoW operations. You will set AI architecture direction, mentor engineers, and collaborate with government stakeholders to turn mission needs into production-ready capabilities.

This role blends hands-on engineering with technical leadership across full-stack development, cloud data pipelines, and security governance to meet DoW standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field; 15 years of experience.
• Proven track record leading engineering teams or as a technical lead on complex software initiatives.
• Hands-on experience deploying generative AI or agentic AI systems in production environments.
• Experience with multi-agent orchestration, RAG, prompt engineering, and LLM API integration.
• Proficient in front-end and back-end development.
• Experience with technologies: Python, .NET/C#, Angular, TypeScript, Docker, AWS, SQL Server, Web/Data Pipelines, Git CI/CD.
• Experience delivering software in secure, regulated environments (ATO, FedRAMP).
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Define and lead the architecture for generative AI solutions, including multi-agent workflows, retrieval-augmented generation, and LLM integration.
• Design, build, and deploy multi-agent orchestration and MCP servers connecting AI agents to enterprise and mission systems.
• Build applications against commercial and government-endorsed LLM endpoints; apply prompt engineering, data routing, and confidence gating.
• Engage with government stakeholders to gather requirements and rapidly prototype mission-value solutions.
• Design, develop, document, test, and debug full-stack applications across front-end, back-end, API, and data layers.
• Shape cloud-forward data environments and pipelines feeding AI workflows including ingestion, classification, and routing.
• Build evaluation harnesses for regression testing, citation verification, and retrieval transparency; perform security testing.
• Lead and mentor engineers on AI tooling and adoption strategies; promote knowledge sharing.
• Influence product roadmaps with field-discovered gaps and user feedback; support release planning.
• Coordinate installations, monitor production, ensure AI capabilities meet specs and mission expectations.
