Position Summary:

The Labor and Delivery Assistant Manager provides leadership and clinical oversight to nursing staff in the Labor and Delivery Unit to ensure safe, high-quality, and compassionate care for mothers and newborns under the direction of the OB Nurse Manager. This position functions as a working supervisor, supporting the unit through coordination of daily operations, patient care assignments, and staff performance, and includes some administrative time. The assistant manager serves as a clinical resource, patient advocate, and role model for professional nursing practice, ensuring alignment with policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

The Labor and Delivery Assistant Manager is responsible for overseeing nursing care during labor, delivery, and immediate postpartum recovery, to include newborn care. This includes managing staffing levels, prioritizing patient flow, mentoring staff, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, and responding to emergencies. The Assistant Manager ensures accurate documentation, adherence to safety protocols, and timely escalation of clinical concerns. They support new employee onboarding, evaluate performance, and help lead quality improvement initiatives and patient safety measures within the unit under the direction and delegation of the OB Nurse Manager.

The Assistant Manager maintains clinical competency, provides direct patient care as needed, and supports a positive, team-based work environment. They play a key role in fostering communication between physicians, nurses, and support staff to ensure a seamless birthing experience for patients and families.

Qualifications:

Candidates must be a licensed Registered Nurse with a current license in good standing. A minimum of two years of Labor and Delivery experience is required, with prior leadership or charge nurse experience preferred. BLS and Advanced Fetal Monitoring certifications are required; NRP and ACLS certifications are also required. The ideal candidate possesses excellent critical thinking skills, calm and confident leadership in emergent situations, and a commitment to family-centered, evidence-based maternity care.
