Job summary

Yakima County Sheriff's Department seeks a qualified Lateral Deputy Sheriff to join the Civil Service Register. Under supervision, protect life and property, enforce laws, and direct traffic. Position may require hazardous tasks, weekends, and rotating shifts.

Candidates must have WA CJTC certification, two years of government service, and meet minimum qualifications. Applications reviewed monthly; veteran preferences may apply.

Qualifications

• Certified by the Washington State CJTC as a qualified law enforcement officer.
• Two years regular service with a government law enforcement agency or equivalent.
• If outside WA, CJTC equivalency training required.

Pay Range: $6,335 per month - $8,827 per month (Deputy Pay Plan Step 1-6)
Hiring Range: $6,335 per month - $6,783 per month (DOE) (Deputy Pay Plan Step 1-2. Hiring above Step 2 must be approved by Board of County Commissioners)

This position is under the Yakima County Deputy Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Officers Guild.

Essential Duties

Under the supervision of a commanding officer, is responsible for the protection of life and property, suppression of crime, enforcement of laws and ordinances, preservation of peace, and traffic direction. Work may require performance of hazardous tasks under emergency and/or arduous conditions, which involve physical and mental stress. Weekends, holidays and rotating shifts are required.

To be considered a Lateral Deputy you must meet these minimum requirements

Certified by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission as a qualified law enforcement officer; and Successfully completed probationary period inclusive with two (2) years regular service with a bona fide government law enforcement agency; or If you live outside Washington, you must beCertified as a lawenforcement officer andmeet the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission WAC Requirements for lateral entry, be sent to the WSCJTC for the equivalency training: andMeets all other minimum qualifications required of entry level applicants.

Candidates that qualify, must score a minimum of 75% on the oral examination. Those applicants who are eligible for veteran’s preference will receive 5 or 10 percent based on eligibility status.

Allcandidates are subject to physical agility/performance test, a background investigation, polygraph test, psychological examination and physical examination.
