Job summary

Caltech is seeking a Laser Safety Officer to lead the Laser Safety Program, ensuring compliance with ANSI Z136 standards, Cal/OSHA, and institutional policies. The role involves training, risk assessments, hazard mitigation, and collaboration with EH&S to promote a safe research environment.

The LSO reports to the Director of Research Safety and requires a background in physics, chemistry, or engineering with practical laboratory experience.

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years in laboratory or research safety with laser systems experience.
  • Knowledge of ANSI Z136 standards, Cal/OSHA/OSHA laser safety regulations, and FDA laser regulations (21 CFR 1040.10/1040.11).
  • Strong communication, training, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated institutional Laser Safety Officer; manage laser safety compliance and documentation.
  • Stay current with evolving laser safety regulations and technologies.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain SOPs and training for laser use in labs and instructional settings.
  • Conduct hazard assessments and inspections to identify hazards and mitigate risks.
  • Develop metrics to measure laser safety program performance and drive improvement.
  • Provide guidance on laser installations and lab renovations with proper controls.
  • Assist with incident investigations and corrective actions; maintain training and inspection records.
  • Participate in on-call response duties and hazmat-related activities.
  • Collaborate with Radiation Safety Officer on lasers interfacing with radiation devices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
