Job Description
General Purpose of Job: Responsible for the efficient and effective processing of patients through the clerical and clinical areas of the practice/clinic. Under the general direction of the physician or advanced practice provider, provides high quality, compassionate patient care.
Essential Duties
This job description covers the minimum essential duties assigned regularly. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Duties may be modified at leadership's discretion.
- Prepares patients for examinations, obtains vital signs and chief complaints, and documents information accurately.
- Performs laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Answers, screens, and triages telephone calls; takes accurate messages and distributes them appropriately.
- Schedules tests and referral appointments.
- Administers oral and injectable medications; communicates prescriptions to pharmacies.
- Promotes patient and family education and provides an educational environment.
- Works on gaps in care registries to enhance care quality.
- Maintains logs and checks (e.g., refrigerator temps, medications, oxygen).
- Participates in in-services, committees, and assists in quality control and policy development.
- Inventories, orders, and restocks supplies.
- Maintains and cleans equipment and ensures environmental safety.
- Provides clerical and clinical services as needed; cross-trained for both.

Work Experience
- Six months of specialty clinic experience may be required for certain clinics.
- Relevant clinical experience within the past 5 years; or recent completion of a medical assistant program.
- Previous medical office experience preferred.
- Experience with EMR systems preferred.
Education
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of an accredited medical assistant program, including externship, OR at least 5 years of relevant Sparrow medical assistant experience.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to provide age-specific patient care considering physical, safety, psychosocial, and educational needs.
- Visual and auditory acuity to monitor patient conditions and operate equipment.
- Positive team attitude and effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in an EMR environment.
