Job summary

Purdue University is seeking a Grounds Maintenance role to care for campus lawns, shrubs, trees and beds. Responsibilities include mowing, edging, fertilizing, weed control and seed/sod preparation, plus operation of riding mowers, carts and other equipment.

Education/experience requirements differ by level; both offer opportunities for growth. Eligible candidates must hold a high school diploma or GED and possess a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Basic grounds maintenance experience including mowing, trimming, mulching, shrub pruning, pesticide application, and grounds cleanliness preferred.
• Good reading and communication in English; valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

• Perform grounds maintenance duties around campus buildings, including mowing, edging, fertilizing, weed control, seed/sod areas, and landscape renovation.
• Operate landscape equipment such as riding mowers, carts, rototillers, lawn sweepers and aerators.
• Maintain records and perform minor equipment maintenance.
• Assist with snow removal and special events as needed.

Job description

Perform grounds maintenance duties, including maintaining grounds cleanliness, shrub pruning, turf fertilization and mowing, landscape equipment operation, pesticide application, and landscape renovation around campus buildings.Maintain campus lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, applying weed control methods, and performing other grounds maintenance duties as assigned.Prepare areas for seed or sod, lay sod, and sow seed. Operate riding mowers, carts, rototillers, lawn sweepers, aerators, and other landscape equipment as needed.Maintain campus trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding, and cleaning shrub plantings. Plant, maintain, trim, and prune hedges. Prepare flowerbeds for planting annuals and bulbs.Maintain appropriate records and perform minor equipment operation and maintenance.

Overtime may be required for special events and campus snow removal. Subject to 24-hour call-back for emergencies.

This position represents a dual-level posting and may be filled as either an S1 or S2. The hiring supervisor will determine the appropriate job level and final salary, with a targeted rate of $18.00–$20.00 per hour, plus benefits, based on the selected candidate’s education, experience, skills, and qualifications.

Education and Experience (S1)
Qualified Candidates Will Need:

• High School Diploma/GED
• Basic grounds maintenance experience, including mowing/trimming, mulching, shrub pruning, pesticide application, and grounds cleanliness, preferred
• Class 3A or 3B Pesticide Applicator’s License preferred

Skills Needed:

• Demonstrated basic to intermediate skills in landscape maintenance
• Ability to read pesticide label and mixing per label
• Ability to keep records
• Ability to read, write and speak English
• Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers
• Ability to perform basic mathematics needed
• Good work organization and problem-solving ability
• Landscape equipment operation and maintenance (i.e. truck, utility cart, etc.) necessary
• Personal protective equipment will be required during specific work duties as determined by the department
• Valid driver’s license required

Education and Experience (S2)
Qualified Candidates Will Need:

• High School Diploma/GED
• 3+ years of experience performing basic grounds maintenance duties, including mowing/trimming, mulching, shrub pruning, pesticide application, and grounds cleanliness
• Class 3A or 3B Pesticide Applicator’s License preferred
