Job summary

Travel between farms is required, with a full-time, 40-hour week and additional hours as needed. The role requires 3–5 years in nursery or grounds management, strong plant care knowledge, equipment operation, and effective English communication.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of all gardens and outdoor growing areas across two sites (≈45 acres).
  • Supervise gardens and grounds staff; create schedules and provide performance feedback.
  • Ensure staff training on equipment and safety; document training.
  • Maintain soil health, irrigation planning, and drainage as needed.
  • Maintain appearance and functionality of outdoor areas and stormwater systems.
  • Manage weed control, mowing, trimming, and general upkeep.
  • Assist Vegetable Gardener as needed for labor, soil, and equipment.
  • Oversee use and maintenance of grounds equipment; coordinate with Maintenance Director.
  • Maintain inventory and vendor relationships for tools and supplies.

Description

Job Title: Landscape Manager

Job Summary: The Landscape Manager is responsible for overseeing all outdoor garden and growing areas, landscapes, and grounds across two nursery farm sites totaling approximately 45 acres, as well as property located at 415 N. Creek Road in Landenberg. This position has no responsibility for buildings, facilities, or structural maintenance.

Position Type:

Full-time required (40 hours/week) with opportunities to work additional hours as needed to accomplish goals and objectives; position requires employees to be prepared to work in all weather conditions (rain or shine); travel between farms is required as part of the position.

Primary Responsibilities:
  1. Oversee day-to-day operations of all gardens and outdoor growing beds/plant areas across both farms—coordinating and executing North Creek strategic plan and vision with Plant Trials Horticulturist
  2. Supervise, direct, and coordinate gardens and grounds staff (e.g., create schedules for planting, transplanting, and pruning); work with HR when staffing needs change; provide feedback and performance evaluations
  3. Ensure employees receive training on all equipment and tool operation—properly documenting all training
  4. Ensure optimal growing conditions through proper soil management, irrigation (by adjusting watering strategies based on weather conditions), crop requirements, soil conditions, identify drainage/erosion issues
  5. Maintain the overall appearance and functionality of all outdoor areas, including stormwater management systems / BMPs
  6. Manage weed control, mowing, trimming, and general grounds upkeep including meadow burning (if possible), compost upkeep, tree work
  7. Assist Vegetable Gardener as needed (labor, equipment, soil)
  8. Oversee use, care of grounds equipment, and coordinate routine maintenance and repairs with Maintenance Director (mowers, tractors, wagons, and gator)
  9. Maintain proper inventory levels of materials and supplies used day to day (maintenance tools/equipment, safety/PPE, irrigation); coordinate and manage vendor relationships
Required Knowledge/Skills:
  1. Three to five years of experience in nursery, horticulture, agriculture, or grounds management
  2. Strong knowledge of plant care, soil health, irrigation systems, and pest management
  3. Experience supervising field crews or outdoor labor teams
  4. Ability to operate and manage agricultural equipment
  5. Must be able to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing (including electronic communication); good knowledge and understanding of computers, including email and wireless devices
  6. Be an excellent communicator with effective listening skills, able to interface effectively with all employees, both hourly staff and management, as well as ability to organize thoughts well and express them in a clear manner that is well received
  7. Must have strong organizational and planning abilities, including effective time management skills
  8. Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution to solve problems (ability to problem solve)
  9. Attention to detail in plant health and site conditions, with ability to prioritize responsibilities
Preferred Knowledge/Skills:
  1. Degree or certification in horticulture, agronomy, or a related field
  2. Experience managing multi-site operations
  3. Familiarity with greenhouse or nursery production environments
