Job summary

The City of Salina, Kansas is seeking a Landfill Operator I to operate heavy equipment (bulldozers, landfill compactors, and loaders) to move, compact and cover municipal waste, while maintaining safety and environmental compliance to protect public health and the environment. Duties include equipment maintenance, road upkeep, litter collection and assisting in cell-fill planning.

Starting pay is $21.14–$22.20/hr, or $43,971–$46,176/year, plus after-hours differential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1 year of progressively responsible construction & maintenance work operating light/medium equipment.
• 1 year of experience operating heavy equipment (dozer, landfill/dirt compactor, wheeled-tractor scraper).
• Bilingual skills are desired but not required.

Responsibilities

LANDFILL OPERATOR I

The Landfill Operator I plays a crucial role in responsible waste management. This position operates heavy equipment such as dozers, compactors, & loaders to ensure the efficient movement, compaction, & covering of municipal solid waste. By maintaining landfill safety, preventing hazardous waste entry, & ensuring environmental compliance, this position directly contributes to protecting public health & the environment.

Duties:

• Performs skilled & semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance & operation of the Salina municipal solid waste landfill.
• Operates landfill compactors, dozers, motor graders, front-end loaders, wheeled-tractor scrapers, compact track loader (skid steer), roll-off truck, water truck & similar equipment at the municipal solid waste landfill & in various assignments.
• Moves, levels, compacts & covers solid waste; assists in the planning to fill cells.
• Looks for & prevents hazardous waste from entering landfill; extinguishes fires at landfill.
• Welds, services & makes repairs to equipment; performs maintenance checks on equipment.
• Maintains landfill roads; mows grounds; collects litter.
• Prepares minimal records of own activities, including burial logs & special wastes.
• Uses handheld GPS rover to determine final grades of waste & intermediate cover.
• Occasionally acts as lead operator for a new or subordinate employee.

Education:

• High school diploma or G.E.D.

Experience:

• One (1) year of progressively responsible construction & maintenance work operating light & medium equipment (tractor, loader, skid steer).
• One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment (dozer, landfill/ dirt compactor, wheeled-tractor scraper).
• Horizontal land construction work preferred; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
• Bilingual skills are desired but not required.

Requirements:

• Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license at hire with means of reliable transportation.
• Must possess a valid Kansas commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake & tanker endorsements or have related heavy equipment experience & the ability to obtain CDL with air brake & tanker endorsements within one (1) year from the start date of employment.

Work Type:

• Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Works inside & outside in possible adverse weather conditions.

Equipment:

• Bulldozer, compact track loader (skid steer), front-end wheel loader, landfill compactors, mechanic’s hand & power tools, motor grader, roll off truck, tractor mower, water truck, weed-eaters, welder, wheeled-tractor scrapers, etc.

Hours:

• 4 (10 hour days) & quarterly shift change (3-10.5 hours, & 1-8.5 hour days).

Starting Pay DOQ EOE:

• $21.14-22.20/hr.
• $43,971-46,176/yr.
• Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.

Paid Time Off:

• 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
• 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
