Job summary

City of St Joseph is seeking an Equipment Operator III to operate and maintain equipment at the landfill and transfer station. You will perform a variety of tasks to support sanitary waste disposal and ensure safe operations.

The role requires operating roll-off, flusher, and dump trucks, with inspections and safety compliance as priorities. CDL preferred; drug screening and background check are mandatory."

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job Summary/Scope

Operates and maintains equipment to maintain proper sanitary solid waste disposal for citizens of St. Joseph. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.

• Operate roll-off trucks, flusher truck, and dump truck safely throughout the landfill and transfer station property.
• Operate a skid steer and or wheel loader when needed.
• Operate a 60,000lb excavator loading material into a container to be hauled to scrap yard.
• Operates tractors with mower attachments
• Maintain safe distances from pedestrians, heavy equipment, and other vehicles.
• Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the assigned truck and equipment.
• Check tires, brakes, lights, hydraulic systems, hoist equipment, container connections, and other safety-related components.
• Report equipment defects, damaged containers, spills, unsafe conditions, or other operational concerns immediately.
• Ensure waste and materials remain contained during transportation and do not create litter or roadway hazards.
• Assist with litter, debris, dust, and general housekeeping around the transfer station and landfill operating areas.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

• Coordinate with dozer, compactor, loader, and other heavy-equipment operators during loading and unloading operations.
• Follow all posted site speed limits, traffic patterns, designated haul routes, and landfill safety procedures.
• Follow all applicable landfill permit conditions, environmental requirements, company policies, and safety procedures.
• Keep assigned truck and equipment clean and in good operating condition.
• Assist with maintaining traffic flow and keeping designated work areas clear and accessible.
• Occasionally perform as a laborer when required.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Skills in the safe operation of equipment used in the maintenance of the Landfill.
• Knowledge of landfill operations, rules and regulations.
• Ability to read surveyor’s marks and build area or projects accordingly.
• Good hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
• Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimum supervision.
• A Valid State of Missouri Class A CDL with Tanker and Trailer endorsements preferred (will assist the successful candidate with obtaining a CDL).
• One year of experience in related field is preferred.

Materials and Equipment Directly Used

Operates a variety of equipment including roll-off truck, flusher truck, loaders, dump truck, excavator, tractors with attachments. Trains in the operation of heavy equipment, such as, dozer, compactor, used in the operation of the landfill. Uses a range of hand tools in performance of maintenance duties. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements

Exposure to extreme weather conditions. Must be able to sit for long periods of time while operating equipment over rough and uneven terrain. Must be able to operate equipment with dexterity. Occasional lifting of 50 pounds and in excess of 50 pounds with assistance, as well as bending, stooping, climbing, reaching and walking over rough terrain. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.
