Job summary

Rockingham County is seeking a full-time position to support the Landfill Superintendent in daily operations. The role involves operating heavy equipment, supervising crew members, and maintaining Landfill equipment in the supervisor's absence.

Applicants must have at least a high school diploma or GED and 2 years of related experience. Certifications in solid waste management, drone operation, and land disturbance are preferred or must be obtained within one year of employment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 2 years of related work experience.
• Certifications: Virginia Solid Waste Management Class II License, Part 107 Drone License, and Responsible Land Disturber, or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
• Knowledge of leachate and gas management is preferred.
• Strong leadership and supervisory abilities.

Responsibilities

• Assign work for the landfill crew by scheduling duties.
• Direct landfill customers on acceptable refuse per county guidelines.
• Ensure proper compaction, spreading, and covering of refuse.
• Operate and assist with heavy equipment as needed.
• Maintain stock of fill dirt and assist in equipment operation.
• Support long-term site planning, capacity expansion, and closure activities.
• Ensure compliance with permits and all regulations.
• Utilize GPS rover, earthwork software, and a drone to mark coordinates and manage data.

Primary Work Location: Office setting

Physical requirements: This is operative work requiring the exertion of up to and exceeding 50 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

Certifications: Virginia Solid Waste Management Class II License, Part 107 Drone License, and Responsible Land Disturber Certificate, or the ability to obtain certifications within one year of employment.

Job Summary: Provides support and assistance to the Landfill Superintendent in the day-to-day operation of the Landfill. Operation of heavy equipment; supervision of Landfill equipment operators and upkeep of Landfill equipment in absence of the Landfill Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions

• Assign work for the Landfill crew by scheduling necessary duties when required
• Serve the landfill customers by determining what refuse is acceptable within county guidelines and giving directions as to where it should be taken in the Landfill to be processed
• Make sure that duties are performed correctly by the Landfill crew by making sure that refuse has been properly compacted, spread and covered
• Bury refuse by using various pieces of heavy equipment when required
• Make sure enough fill dirt is constantly stockpiled when required
• Assist with heavy equipment operator as needed
• Assist in planning for long-term site capacity, expansion and closure activities
• Ensure compliance with operational permits, federal, state, and local regulations
• Assist in utilizing a GPS rover, earthwork software, and a drone to mark GPS coordinates, manage data, and evaluate compaction.
• Does other related tasks as necessary

Knowledge

• Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes assessment of customer needs, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
• Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources
• Basic understanding of leachate and gas management
