County of Chester, South Carolina is seeking a landfill operations professional to perform scale house duties, operate heavy equipment, and oversee daily site maintenance. You will provide on-site leadership to staff and coordinate tasks under the Landfill Supervisor, ensuring compliance with permits and regulations.

  • Performs daily equipment inspections and routine preventive maintenance.
  • Maintains the landfill grounds, buildings, roads, fence lines, and disposal areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Observes established safety procedures and uses required personal protective equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Performs daily landfill operations including scale house duties, heavy equipment operation, site maintenance and upkeep, and assistance with waste management at site. Provides day to-day work direction and coordination to landfill staff as assigned by the Landfill Operations & Facilities. Operates the landfill working face under the direction of the Landfill Supervisor and in accordance with the landfill permit and applicable regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operates scale house; weighs vehicles, enters data, prints tickets, and maintains accurate records. Inspects incoming loads for acceptable waste and directs customers to appropriate disposal areas.
  • Communicates professionally with citizens, haulers, vendors, and County staff.
  • Operates loaders, bulldozers, compactors, graders, forklifts, and other equipment as trained and assigned.
  • Pushes, spreads, grades, and compacts waste and cover material at the working face as directed by the Landfill Supervisor.
  • Performs assigned duties in accordance with the landfill permit, operating procedures, and applicable regulations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma/GED and related equipment, landfill, maintenance, or customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and follow landfill operating procedures, permit requirements, and supervisor instructions.
  • Ability to provide work direction, coordinate daily activities, and communicate expectations to other employees.
  • Basic computer, recordkeeping, and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to identify unacceptable waste and potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public and coworkers. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Adjusting and performing preventive maintenance on the equipment to which assigned.
  • Recognizing potentially hazardous situations on the job site and taking appropriate action.
  • Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools related to the work.
  • Processing and accounting for cash transactions.

  • Working without close supervision in standard work situations.
  • Understanding and following written and oral instructions.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

  • Landfill Operator Certification within 12 months of hire
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, and equipment operation and the ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 75-100 pounds with appropriate assistance or equipment. Work is primarily performed outdoors and may involve extreme weather, dust, odors, noise, moving equipment, waste materials, and other conditions associated with landfill operations. pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.

Works required most Saturdays and varying hours in emergency situations.

Work is subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust and noxious odors.
