Job summary

Calvert County Government is seeking a facilities maintenance worker to perform a wide range of upkeep tasks at Solid Waste facilities. Responsibilities include carpentry, equipment maintenance, and operating tractors and other vehicles, with work performed under supervision.

Requirements include a high school diploma, two years of maintenance experience, and a valid Class B CDL with a Medical Examiner’s Certificate to be obtained within six months.

  • Valid Class B commercial driver’s license and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate must be obtained within the first six months of employment.

  • Operate and maintain landfill equipment and trucks/tractors; assist with fuel and waste site tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities, perform equipment checks, and follow safety protocols.

Job Description

Performs facility and equipment maintenance work at the County Solid Waste Facilities. Work involves performing general maintenance to buildings and grounds, driving tractors and other vehicles, and operating and maintaining mechanical landfill equipment. Work requires ability to follow instructions and is performed under close to general supervision.

Essential Job Functions

Performs general carpentry work on structures. Builds sheds, ramps or similar structures. Makes repairs to roofs of buildings and other components short of need for professional contracting services. Repairs and maintains landfill equipment. Operates tractors to haul fuel to off‑road equipment. Maintains fuel tank records. Operates utility truck for home pickup and roll‑off truck as needed. Cuts grass and weeds with riding mower and weed eater. Sprays herbicides and grass retardants at compactor site. Washes vehicles and landfill equipment, changes oil, lubricates off‑road equipment, changes tires. Operates non‑stationary compactor, loader and skid‑steer loader. Informs general public regarding solid waste procedures and regulations. Picks up trash that blows out of landfill. Operates hand tools and chain saws. Cleans office sidewalks and shovels snow. Works at compactor sites when needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre‑employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

Ability to-- Perform general building and equipment maintenance. Operate trucks and tractors safely. Follow oral and written instructions. Deal effectively with the public.

Required Qualifications

Training and/or Education: Completion of the tenth grade. Experience: Two years of general building, labor, and equipment maintenance experience. Licenses or Certificates: Valid Class B commercial driver’s license and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment.

Special Requirements

Must be 18 years of age. Operation of County owned vehicle. Subject to alcohol and drug testing.

Physical Demands

Requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 100 pounds.

Unusual Demands

Worker is exposed to dirt and soil, and hazards from working with equipment and tools. Requires working in all weather conditions. Required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Subject to call in or to remain on the job for emergencies.

FLSA Status

Nonexempt.

Compensation

Pay rate: $23.30 - $24.96 per hour; $42,406 - $45,427 annually Grade 715, full‑time position, 35 hours per week Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Position closing date: September 14, 2026. Please Note: This position will close at 11:59 p.m. on September 14, 2026. The position will be removed from the website as of 12:00 a.m. on September 15th.

Telework

This position allows for telework, meaning the employee may be able to work from home or another offsite location for part of the workweek, but they are still required to come into the office regularly. This arrangement is at the supervisor's discretion and may change based on business needs.
