Job summary

Buncombe County Government is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Solid Waste Department at the landfill on 85 Panther Branch Road. The role supports operation of diverse heavy equipment and site maintenance, with a required Saturday shift and subsequent time off.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience operating heavy motorized equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• SWANA Operator training required within the first 12 months of hire.
• Possession of a valid NC driver’s license and CDL-A required.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain multiple heavy equipment units (front-end loader, compactor, bulldozer, scraper, pan).
• Prepare and grade sites for future landfill development per regulations.
• Install drainage pipes to ensure proper site drainage.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance and inspections on equipment.
• Operate trash compactor and monitor loads for hazardous materials per standards.
• Operate roll-off truck to empty dumpsters.
• Direct customers and manage site traffic.
• Complete inspection forms and documentation.
• Conduct grading, seeding, and erosion-control measures; beautification of sites.
• Mow with excavator/bush hog; weed eating; sweep roads; maintain supplies.
