An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA), an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering and land surveying company that has built a reputation of civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking a Land Surveyor I to join our growing Construction and Survey team in Vernon Hills, IL.

How you will make an impact:

The Land Surveyor I will report to the Division Director and perform a variety of basic technical engineering work involving both field and office support of land surveying project. This position also includes operating various types of equipment, performing related mathematical computations, and provide support to professional engineering staff. This role is a non-exempt, hourly, position. We offer a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities:

• Support Professional Land Surveyors (PLS) in project work.
• Assist PLS and Survey Technicians in field duties.
• Assist in providing field and record information to be used in production of engineering drawings and reports.
• Operates survey instruments, conducts basic field adjustments, maintains neat and orderly field notes, utilize hand-held data collectors/computerized software and performs research required to complete surveys and staking as directed.
• Working outdoors in different weather conditions/environments performing field work, completing topographic surveys, boundary surveys and/or construction layout.
• Participate in the production of plans and the preparation, filling and retrieval of engineering maps, documents, and records.
• The candidate will be trained in the land survey concepts required to complete this work independently.

Qualifications

Education:

• Preferred college degree in land surveying, civil engineering, or construction management.

Experience:

• The employee must be capable of driving/operating a motor vehicle for company business and maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License and registered, insured personal vehicle.
• Ability to learn Microstation/GEOPAK and/or AutoCAD/Civil 3D.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Utilize various surveying, engineering, and word processing software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and other programs.
• Must be able to take direction, collaborate with other team members, have good interpersonal skills, and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Work is performed in both an office environment and outdoors including sites with exposure to inclement weather or extreme weather conditions. Moderate physical demands, including sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods of time. Strength sufficiently to lift and move items weighting up to sixty (60) pounds. Vision should be sufficient to see and read plan specifications and drive a vehicle with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate survey equipment. Hearing sufficient to converse in the normal audio range with or without correction.

ADA SPECIFICATIONS

• May require occasional bending and lifting up to 50 pounds.
• May require periodic travel up to 30%.
