Job description

The role

Hicks & Mann has been surveying in Grant County and the five counties around it since 1976. We are adding someone at the start of a survey career. You would work on a field crew, learn the work from the ground up, and take on more of it as you show you can.

Every survey starts with people on the ground. Property corners get found and set, lines get cleared and measured, and stakes go in for the streets and utilities that get built from our plans. This job is where all of that is learned. It is also called survey helper, rodman, or survey assistant at other firms.

What you would do
  • Hold the rod and run the tape on boundary, topographic and construction surveys
  • Learn to set up and level a robotic total station and a GNSS receiver, and to collect and check the data
  • Find, recover and set property corners and monuments
  • Set stakes for streets, utilities and building pads during construction
  • Clear line, flag and mark boundaries, and keep the truck and equipment in order
  • Help in the office with record research and drafting as you learn it
What we need
  • No survey experience. A willingness to learn, to be shown, and to do it again until it is right.
  • A valid driver’s license. You will drive company vehicles to job sites.
  • Able to work outdoors year round, in heat, cold and rain, walk uneven ground, and lift and carry survey equipment. Field work is an essential function of the role.
  • Reliable and on time, and careful with numbers and details. Basic geometry and arithmetic.
What helps
  • Time in construction, farming, or other outdoor trades
  • Coursework in surveying, civil engineering technology, drafting or math
  • Any familiarity with AutoCAD or Carlson
Where it leads

Field crews are where surveyors and crew chiefs start. For the right person the job leads to crew chief, and toward a Kentucky survey license if that is your goal.

Compensation

Hourly, paid weekly. Starting pay depends on experience and we will put a number on the table on the first call rather than making you guess. Field vehicle and survey equipment provided. This is a W‑2 position with paid holidays and paid time off.

Equal opportunity

Hicks & Mann, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. Hiring decisions are made on qualifications, experience and the needs of the work, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal or Kentucky law.

If you need an accommodation to apply or to interview, say so and we will arrange it. Every person hired must be able to document identity and authorization to work in the United States, as federal law requires of every employer.
