Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in Houston is seeking a Laminator Operator to run the laminator, perform setup, monitor quality, and support production reporting. The role requires attention to labeling specs, accurate measurements, and adherence to safety standards.

You will train and assist other operators, cross-train on related machines, and contribute to continuous improvement while meeting production schedules.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 6 months of experience in the Press or Finishing department preferred.
  • Prior experience in corrugated industry preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow factory masters.
  • Ability to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to perform basic math and calculations.
  • Ability to apply concepts of high school math.
  • Possess ability to follow written instructions and solve problems.

Responsibilities

  • Set-up laminator accurately in accordance with proper setup techniques.
  • Inspect labels for spec and registration before running.
  • Maintain label storage area and provide inventories.
  • Monitor sheet quality (warp, loose liner, size).
  • Check glue roll for proper application.
  • Maximize equipment utilization by running at capacity and speed.
  • Train and assist Stacker with machine duties.
  • Cross-train on other machines (die cutters).
  • Complete production reports and data accurately and timely.
  • Submit maintenance work orders as needed; uphold housekeeping.

The Opportunity:

Responsible for all activities associated with running the laminator including setup, operation, production reporting, cleanup, cross training, and recommending improvements to operations. The position holder will report to the Production Supervisor.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:

The Laminator Operator works within a team to operate the Laminator in a safe, efficient and reliable manner. The position holder will follow all pertinent procedures & processes as well as Group Health & Safety standards and rules

Primary Duties
  • Set-up laminator accurately in accordance with proper setup techniques.
  • Inspect labels before running to ensure that label is to specification, particularly trim and registration.
  • Maintain and keep the label storage area orderly. Provide inventories for sales management and accounting.
  • Monitor corrugated sheet quality, including, but not limited to, loose liner, warp, and correct size.
  • Check glue roll for proper glue application.
  • Maximize the utilization of equipment by operating the machinery at available capacity and speed.
  • Maintain file of Mylars for registration for repeat orders.
  • Train and assist Stacker with job duties on the machine.
  • Crosstrain on other machines, particularly die cutters.
  • Assist with training as needed.
  • Complete necessary reports in an accurate and timely manner, including but not limited to: Production Data, Machine Operational Status, Safety Data, Quality Data.
  • Turn in maintenance work orders to supervision for needed repairs. Be proactive in the maintenance of equipment.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety and maintaining good housekeeping.
  • Adheres to production schedule. Make recommendations for optimizing the schedule to meet cost, quality and service goals. Reports any unusual scheduling issues to Supervisor.
  • Additional duties may be assigned by management.
What you need to succeed:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Prior work experience in the corrugated industry preferred
  • 6 months of experience in the Press or Finishing department preferred
  • Ability to read and follow instructions on factory masters
  • Able to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy.
  • Able to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurement, volume and rate.
  • Able to apply concepts of high school math.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving one or more concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have working knowledge of the following:
    • Equipment design and capabilities that can be translated into efficient operation.
    • Product layouts and production specifications
    • Product quality specifications
    • Quality standards
  • Capable of prioritizing multiple tasks, showing a sense of urgency
  • Ability to provide and communicate sound information to management
