Responsibilities

  • Present their work at lab meetings, local seminars, and local/national conferences.
  • Help organize lab consumables and ordering.
  • Contribute to routine lab maintenance tasks (e.g., autoclaving, cleaning).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Purpose

The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for providing research and administrative support for the PI’s laboratory.

Supervisory Authority

None

Nature And Scope

Internal contacts include administrators, program staff, faculty, principal investigator and students of Howard University. External contacts Include representatives from other universities, federal agencies, and industry.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Maintenance of laboratory fly stocks
  • Executing research experiments under the mentorship of the PI, documenting their research in a laboratory notebook
  • Training students and new staff in routine laboratory techniques and protocols
  • Presenting their work at lab meetings, local seminars, and local/national conferences
  • Help organize lab consumables and ordering
  • Contribute to routine lab maintenance tasks (e.g., autoclaving, cleaning)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Core Competencies
  • Experience with wet laboratory biology research (e.g., use of pipettes, lab notebooks)
  • Intermediate to advanced skill in Word and Excel (or similar programs)
  • Ability to apply complex analytical concepts and verify the accuracy of data presented for processing and makes recommendation for resolution;
  • Ability to define instructions, adhere to a changing system of specific policies and procedures
  • Competence in both oral and written English to communicate in a clear and concise manner;
  • Ability to be well organized and highly attentive to detail;
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Biology or closely related field. Experience with Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) is not required but strongly preferred.
