Job Overview

Carnegie Mellon University’s Facilities Management Services (FMS) is looking for a Laborer to support various maintenance and construction trades across the Pittsburgh campus. The role involves assisting skilled tradespeople, operating utility vehicles, and maintaining accurate job documentation.

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist staff in plumbing, pipefitting, HVAC, carpentry, electrical, painting, and masonry projects.
  • Perform semi‑skilled tasks in a variety of maintenance and construction trades.
  • Operate off‑road utility vehicles and light trucks for assigned work.
  • Requisition job parts and supplies.
  • Use smartphones, iPads/Tablets, and electronic work order systems to document work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: Two years of full‑time experience in a relevant trade, with at least one year as a sub‑journeyman (apprentice or helper) in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or structural trades.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles.
  • Ability to work various shifts, work overtime, and be available for call‑out work.
  • Proficiency with hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to handle challenging customers.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions on when additional help is needed.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate reports and records.
  • Physical abilities: lift up to 40lb from ground to overhead, move in confined spaces, climb ladders, work from ladders, scaffolding, and bucket truck platforms; occasionally work outside in inclement conditions.
Preferred Experience & Certifications
  • Maintenance experience in an institutional setting (college, university, hospital, etc.).
  • Formal training in electrical, mechanical, or structural systems.
  • Certifications such as lift certification, scaffolding, fall protection, forklift, etc.
Additional Requirements
  • Successful background check.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License with annual motor‑vehicle record check.
  • Fitness for duty assessment and pre‑employment medical exam.
  • Pre‑employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • PA Child Protection clearance (Act153).
  • Must be a member of, or agree to join, Local#95 International Union of Operating Engineers bargaining unit.
Employment Details
  • Full‑time (40 hours/week), non‑exempt.
  • Location: Pittsburgh, PA.
  • Hourly pay.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; the employer will not sponsor visas.
