Position Description

This position involves general maintenance and custodial work at the Burlington Police Department, City Hall, and occasionally at the Port of Burlington, Depot, and Auditorium. The Laborer I is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the interior and exterior of these buildings, including sidewalks and the outer perimeter.

Essential Functions

• Clean all floors, including waxing, mopping, and buffing.
• Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste appropriately.
• Dust furniture, fixtures, windowsills, and light fixtures regularly.
• Clean restrooms on a regular schedule.
• Wash windows and clean other interior and exterior areas as directed.
• Assist with painting, carpentry, masonry, and installation of signs and markers.
• Perform minor plumbing and carpentry repairs.
• Use outdoor equipment such as weed eaters, snow shovels, snow blowers, and others to maintain the exterior surroundings.
• Maintain daily time records and ensure punctual attendance.
• Represent the City professionally and responsibly.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ability to operate equipment such as forklift, lawnmowers, weed eaters, snow blowers, pumps, scrubbing machines, buffers, vacuum cleaners, etc.
• Basic carpentry skills and ability to use hand tools for maintenance and repairs.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., occasionally up to 100 lbs.
• Ability to work at heights and outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Effective communication skills and ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Iowa Driver’s License.
• Experience in custodial work or demonstrated ability.
• Pass a background check, drug screen, and physical exam.
• Residence within 15 air miles of Burlington city limits.
