GlycoSurf is looking for a Laboratory Technician to work in the area of purification and organic synthesis. While the main duties will involve the purification of several molecules via flash chromatography this position offers the opportunity to work closely with the bio-surfactant production team and assist in various syntheses when needed. You will receive on-the-job learning opportunities to develop expertise in different areas of organic chemistry including reaction methodology, catalysis, carbohydrate chemistry, various chromatographic methods, and analytical techniques. Typical Job Functions

  • Conduct multiple small and large scale purifications daily using two flash chromatographs following established SOPs.
  • Conduct recrystallization procedures when necessary following established SOPs.
  • Collaborate closely with the production team to determine purification timeline.
  • Develop and optimize purification methods and mobile phases using the principles of green chemistry.
  • Continually operate and maintain solvent recyclers to reduce waste streams created by chromatography and recrystallizations.
  • Maintain and trouble shoot chromatography equipment.
  • Interact with a small cross-functional team to offer technical solutions and consultation for elucidation of new synthetic pathways.
  • Assist the production team with a variety of syntheses with a focus on hydrogenation reactions.
  • Improve existing processes to reduce cost and increase reliability, purity, and safety.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or similar physical science degree with 0-1 year of training

Preferred: Moderate-term on-the-job training, such as 1 – 2 years’ experience as a chemical laboratory technician, research assistant, or equivalent.

  • Proficiency in the analysis of compounds and reaction progress using TLC and experience using and troubleshooting and analytical instruments such as LCMS, GCMS, and NMR.
  • Organic laboratory skills and intuition, specifically in reaction design/set-up, purification of compounds using different chromatographic methods (i.e. hand columns and flash chromatography), recrystallization, and distillation.
  • Sound knowledge of mechanistic and physical organic chemistry principles.
  • Familiarity in all aspects of laboratory safety and industrial hygiene.
  • Strong knowledge in mathematics and statistics.
  • Experience in carbohydrate chemistry is a plus.
  • Knowledge of GDP and GLP is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • The ability to work independently to manage timelines and deliver results, while being an effective team contributor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English).
  • Proficiency in electronic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation systems, as well as comfort in using electronic systems and databases.
