Laboratory Technician

Med-Cell Biology - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - ( 25001894 )

The Hammond lab in the Department of Cell Biology is searching for a new graduate research assistant. This is an exciting opportunity to get to grips with some of our cutting-edge techniques and innovative research covering the role of lipids and membranes in health and disease. The position will include approximately 10% time spent on managerial tasks like ordering and compliance (to vary based on demand) – though the vast majority will be spent on experiments and research. The successful applicant will receive training and become adept in:

  1. Molecular cloning techniques and gene editing with Cas9
  2. Cell culture
  3. Live cell fluorescence microscopy
  4. Quantitative digital image analysis
  5. State-of-the-art super resolution imaging approaches

Managerial responsibilities will include:

  1. Assisting the PI and lab manager in maintaining lab inventory and ordering
  2. Assisting the PI and lab manager in maintaining a safe and well-maintained laboratory in compliance with EH&S regulations.

Prior experience in any of these aspects will be advantageous. The successful applicant must have an Associate degree or above in a biomedical or associated scientific subject that encompassed several credits of research experience; the candidate must also be reliable, organized, and possess strong interpersonal skills. Job Summary

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.

Essential Functions

The candidate must be able to think critically and be cognizant of chemical reactions for their own safety and for the safety of other lab personnel. This individual must be able to lift, mix, and carry volatile, at times hazardous materials with assistance. Must be able to recognize dangerous situations and be able to respond to them.

Physical Effort

“Normal” walking within the laboratory will be necessary, as well as minor lifting of chemicals and other laboratory items.
