Job Description
Perform a variety of specialized, routine and non-routine tests, procedures, and examinations in all necessary technical areas of the laboratory. Provides technical and operational support to the laboratory. Collaborates with the manager, technical specialists and lead technologists to support a high-quality work environment. Acts as a liaison between the laboratory and internal and external customers.
In the absence of the laboratory manager, must be responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures, reporting of test results, and handling of personnel issues.
Responsibilities
Engages in the essential duties of laboratory personnel while actively providing hands-on support to the testing team. This collaboration facilitates the effective execution of all operational clinical tests, which is vital for achieving our service goals.
Coordinates and leads the daily workflow and work activities of the specimen processing and phlebotomy areas.
Maintains competency in all processing and phlebotomy tasks. Provides hands-on backup support to the processing and phlebotomy team. Monitors departmental workflow for productivity and efficiency, including monitoring of staffing patterns to assure maximum productivity & scheduling to maximize the use of associate's time.
In partnership with the laboratory manager, participates in interviews and recommends hiring of associates; coordinates training; assesses the competency of staff; evaluates performance of associates; and when necessary, recommends discipline and discharge.
Assists in the documentation of performance improvement activities. Consults with both internal and external customers to assess needs and to provide superior customer service. Recommends and implements changes to work processes. Reviews and follows up on customer concern forms with lab support staff. Aids the manager by performing all other duties as assigned.
Serves as a liaison between the laboratory and all external customers. Communicates regularly with nursing leadership; particularly during times where the laboratory has trouble meeting the workload demands. Coordinates a course of action in conjunction with nursing leadership to ensure all necessary lab work is completed.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b)(3)(ii) (see NOTE 2); or
Successful completion of at least a 50-week official US military medical laboratory procedures training course and currently hold or have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).
Preferred:
Completion of certification/licensure requirements that meet CLIA/CAP requirements for the performance of high complexity testing.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience required. Leadership experience required.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of laboratory operations; familiarity with laboratory departments, functions and processes; strong organizational and interpersonal skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; PC word processing, and spreadsheet skills. Demonstrated success in people and operational leadership.
LICENSES REGISTRATIONS &/or CERTIFICATIONS:
Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or certification through other national certifying agency preferred.
