The University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurology is seeking a motivated Laboratory Research Technician to join a translational neuroimmunology research group. The research technician will perform a variety of independent laboratory work, including determining experimental protocols, animal colony management, preparing specimens and cultures, acquiring and analyzing data, and generating figures in research project(s) related to neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and multiple sclerosis. They will also help maintain lab inventories and ordering, keeping detailed and accurate logs, and ensure compliance with institutional lab safety protocols and approvals (IACUC and IBC). Meticulous record keeping of research data and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are prerequisites for this position.Following training from the principal investigator and/or senior research staff, the research assistant is expected to perform tasks with minor supervision.
A qualified candidate should have at least a bachelor’s degree in biological science or equivalent and at least 2 years’ experience in a biomedical research setting. Candidates with demonstrated expertise in mouse handling, husbandry, and colony management and working knowledge of routine biomedical research procedures such as cell culture, immunofluorescence labeling and microscopy, and PCR will be preferred. A cover letter stating career goals, plan and motivation for applying to this position is required.
Job Summary
Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations.
Essential Functions
1. Assist with experimental procedures, data collection, and analysis (50% effort)
2. Oversee mouse colony management, breeding, genotyping, and record-keeping (30% effort)
3. Administrative and other duties (20% effort)
· Maintain and order supplies as needed for research projects
· Maintain the office and laboratory area in a clean and safe condition
