Med-Otolaryngology

The Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine seeks a full-time Laboratory Research Technician III to support the translational research laboratory of the Deputy Director of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery. This position is primarily focused on the collection, processing, storage, and management of clinical biospecimens in a fast-paced translational research environment. The incumbent will work closely with investigators, research staff, and clinical teams to ensure the integrity and availability of biological samples supporting active research protocols. The ideal candidate brings mid-level hands-on laboratory experience, a strong attention to detail, and familiarity with IRB compliance and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience: 2–4 years of hands-on wet-lab research experience, with demonstrated proficiency in biospecimen collection, processing, and biobanking. Experience in a translational or clinical research setting is preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in biological sample handling and biobanking procedures. Familiarity with IRB protocols, biospecimen regulatory requirements, and laboratory safety guidelines. Working knowledge of molecular and biochemical techniques (e.g., qPCR, Western blotting) is a plus.
  • Soft Skills: Strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research team.
Essential Functions
  • Collect, process, aliquot, and store biological specimens (blood, saliva, surgical drain fluid, tumor tissue) in accordance with established standard operating procedures and research protocols.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date sample inventories with associated clinical annotations and metadata.
  • Ensure timely retrieval and distribution of biospecimens to investigators and collaborators.
  • Support coordination of biospecimen collection logistics across clinical and research teams.
  • Assist with the maintenance and organization of biobanking databases and tracking systems.
  • Perform routine molecular and biochemical assays (e.g., qPCR, Western blotting) and support cell culture and immunological techniques as needed to support ongoing research projects.
  • Maintain IRB-related laboratory documentation, assist with protocol compliance, and support preparation for laboratory inspections and audits.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough record-keeping, data entry, and maintenance of laboratory notebooks in compliance with institutional guidelines.
  • Adhere to all institutional, regulatory, and biosafety requirements, including proper handling and disposal of biological materials.
  • Assist with laboratory inventory management, reagent ordering, and maintenance of equipment and workspaces.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures and technical guidelines related to biospecimen handling.
