Job Description - Laboratory Research Technician (25001225)

This position is for the Division of Nephrology within the Department of Pediatrics. The PI seeks to hire a hard-working, organized and technically proficient molecular biologist to investigate the mechanisms underlying the link between the Integrated Stress Response (ISR), a stress-sensitive pathway essential to protein homeostasis, and kidney injury. Preferred courses taken should include advanced lecture and laboratory classes in molecular biology, biochemistry and chemistry. Preferred but not required skills include proficiency with growing and propagating cells (i.e. cell culture), experience with protein and/or RNA extraction, and quantitation of protein and/or RNA expression (Western Blot and qPCR). Candidate must be amenable to working with mice and mouse tissue. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. This position is located at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment. Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.

Essential Functions
  1. Percentage of Time: 50%
    Responsibility/Duty: Perform biochemical and cell biology experiments, including but not limited to PCR, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, and genotyping (mouse tissue samples); provide support for other team members, maintain a thorough and legible lab notebook, analyze and interpret data generated, and mentor undergraduate students periodically.
    Performance Standard: Experiments must be properly controlled, and data obtained and methods employed must be well documented in a lab notebook. Applicant must be punctual with assigned meeting times and experimental deadlines.
  2. Percentage of Time: 20%
    Responsibility/Duty: Review current literature and protocols to overcome experimental hurdles. Individual will be expected to attend and occasionally assist in presenting at weekly group meetings, in addition to divisional meetings at the Children’s Hospital.
    Performance Standard: Individual is expected to bring relevant literature to the attention of the lab PI as it relates to the research project.
  3. Percentage of Time: 20%
    Responsibility/Duty: Preparation of data into presentations and manuscripts for presentation at group meetings (~once per month).
    Performance Standard: Will help in writing manuscripts for publication, and therefore, excellent scientific writing skills will be expected.
  4. Percentage of Time: 10%
    Responsibility/Duty: Other duties as assigned, such as general lab maintenance and upkeep.
    Performance Standard: Flexibility with the ability to adapt to changing environment and tasks. Ability to multi-task required.
