Laboratory Research Technician I

This position is for the Division of Genetic and Genomic Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for the degree requirement. The position is located at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. Prior to employment, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, and a current TB test will be required. Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and analysis on various specimen samples. Operates, sterilizes equipment, maintains inventory, and assists with ordering supplies.

Essential Functions

1. Performs research related to the molecular basis, small molecules, and gene therapy of the rare genetic disease Prader-Willi syndrome (and other genetic disorders), including vector generation, use of AAV viral vectors, mammalian cell culture, and genetic disease models.
2. Performs molecular biology procedures (DNA, RNA, protein, viral), mammalian cell culture, transfection, transduction, microscopy, and work with mammalian specimens (handling, breeding, genotyping, tissue dissection).
3. Maintains detailed lab notebooks and electronic data; contributes to data presentation, publication, and grant preparation.
4. Maintains laboratory cleanliness, organization, equipment, and supplies.

Physical Effort

Light physical activity including movement within the laboratory, handling mice, standing, and light lifting (e.g., supplies, tissue culture trays).
