Job summary

Perimeter College Newton Campus seeks a dedicated Laboratory Coordinator to support daily laboratory operations, ensure safety procedures, supervise technicians and student workers, and coordinate procurement and records under the Department Chair.

This full-time on-campus position supports instructional activities, collaborates with faculty and staff, and maintains equipment inventories to sustain high-quality labs across the department.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in the assigned research area or a Bachelor's degree in the assigned area with two years related experience.

• Master's degree in Chemistry preferred.
• Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for the labs and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Teach up to three laboratory courses per semester and coordinate schedules to ensure effective lab operations.
• Order, prepare, and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment; recruit, train, and supervise student assistants and lab technicians.
• Maintain laboratory facilities, spaces and storage, ensuring safety standards and coordination with surplus for obsolete equipment.
• Coordinate procurement of supplies and equipment, obtain vendor quotes, secure approvals, and maintain logs and maintenance
• Serve as the primary contact for part-time instructors, providing onboarding, guidance on policies, and ongoing instructional support.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

This is a full-time staff position that requires an on-campus presence of 40 hours per week to support the daily operations of the laboratories and provide direct support to instructional activities.

Primary responsibilities include implementing and enforcing all laboratory safety procedures; supervising, training, and evaluating laboratory technicians and student workers; procuring materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for laboratory operations and instructional support; maintaining equipment inventories; obtaining vendor quotations; updating purchasing and ordering logs; and maintaining departmental records as requested by the Department Chair.

The Laboratory Coordinator also supports instructional excellence by ensuring laboratories are properly prepared for classes and may contribute to course design, development, and implementation as needed. This position requires regular collaboration with faculty, staff, and students and a consistent on-campus presence to meet the operational needs of the department.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Coordinator are the following:

• Teach up to three (3) laboratory courses per semester based on departmental instructional needs; provide instructional coverage for laboratory courses during temporary faculty absences, including approved leave, Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), professional conferences, or other approved university business, as needed; and collaborate with faculty course coordinators to develop, coordinate, and maintain laboratory schedules for assigned courses to ensure effective laboratory operations and instructional support.
• Order, prepare, and maintain laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment to support weekly laboratory instruction; develop and maintain current laboratory procedures manuals for laboratory instructors and technicians; recruit, train, and supervise student assistants and laboratory technicians in accordance with departmental policies and approved safety guidelines; and collaborate with other Laboratory Coordinators in the department to promote consistency in laboratory operations, procedures, and instructional support across all Perimeter College campuses.
• Maintain laboratory facilities, including laboratory spaces and storage/preparation rooms, to ensure they are clean, organized, well-equipped, and in compliance with safety standards; oversee the proper storage, maintenance, and organization of laboratory materials and equipment; and coordinate the identification and transfer of obsolete or unused equipment and materials to University Surplus in accordance with university policies.
• Coordinate the procurement of laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment by placing orders, obtaining vendor quotations, securing required purchase approvals from the Associate Chair, maintaining procurement documentation and P-Card logs (when assigned a University P-Card), overseeing preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment, and reporting equipment failures and resolutions to the Department Chair to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for part-time laboratory instructors by providing guidance on laboratory policies, protocols, procedures, and course content; coordinating onboarding and training; communicating departmental expectations; and providing ongoing instructional and operational support to ensure the consistent delivery of laboratory instruction across the department.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• Master's degree in the assigned research area or;
• Bachelor's degree in the assigned research area and two years of related experience, or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

College teaching experience preferred. Experience with setting up, maintaining and using various lab equipment. Ability to trouble shoot problems and effectively communicate with direct supervisors.

Master's degree in Chemistry preferred.

Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for the labs, as well as how to safely use them; safety regulations, procedures & practices; current software needed for instruction.

Ability to lift or move equipment in the lab.

Collegiate chemistry teaching experience.
