Job summary

Penn State Health - St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading, PA seeks a Laboratory Assistant to perform phlebotomies across all ages, register patients, and order tests in the EMR. The role includes specimen processing, collection of specialized tests, and breath alcohol testing.

This PRN position requires HS diploma, valid PA driver’s license, and BLS by orientation end date. Preferred qualifications include phlebotomy/MA/CNA training and ASCP or NHA phlebotomy certification.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Valid Driver's license or eligible for PA driver's license if out-of-state.
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) – required prior to end of orientation.

Responsibilities

Evening Shift Differential: $2.00/hour
Hours:day/evenings weekend


SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The laboratory assistant is responsible for performing phlebotomies on patients of all age groups, performing patient registrations and ordering laboratory tests in the EMR, processing of laboratory specimens, the collection of specialized tests, and performing breath alcohol testing.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • Valid Driver's license or eligible for a Commonwealth of PA driver's license if out of state
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) – required prior to the end of the orientation period

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Completion of a phlebotomy, certified nursing assistant, or medical assistant training course
  • Certification with ASCP or the National Healthcareer Association, Inc. as a certified phlebotomy technician or other discipline listed above
  • Must have the ability to work well under pressure and multitask in a fast paced environment
  • Medical terminology is helpful
