Job summary

ECU Health North Hospital is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to process outpatient test requests and collect blood specimens by venous and capillary methods. Under supervision, you may perform waived and moderately complex testing and handle chain-of-custody collections.

You will maintain documentation to ensure regulatory compliance, support department goals, and help deliver high-quality patient care across day/evening/night shifts and weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of phlebotomy training recommended.

Position Summary

The Laboratory Assistant processes outpatient test requests.

As a Laboratory Assistant, You Will

• Perform venous and capillary collection of blood specimens for analysis and process specimens for analysis and reference testing. With supervision, may perform waived and moderately complex testing and may perform chain-of-custody drug collections. Perform various other support services for the laboratory as assigned. Maintain required documentation to comply with accrediting agencies.
• Perform duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Support the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities.

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma, Equivalent, or higher
• Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended

Preferred

• 6 months experience in a hospital or reference laboratory setting, physician office, outpatient clinic, or other medical setting

Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or another nationally recognized certifying agency is preferred: National Healthcare Association (NHA) --Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists-- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE), National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or another national certification as approved by Laboratory Service Line leadership.
