Responsibilities

  • Perform basic assessment of patients and give instructions in the proper collection of specimens.
  • Accurately identify patients and label specimens correctly and clearly.
  • Independently collect blood by capillary and venipuncture with minimal discomfort.
  • Function as laboratory receptionist by receiving test orders, answering phones, verifying tests, and determining collection priority.
  • Process all types of body fluid and tissue specimens, assuring specimen quality and proper identification.
  • Perform EKGs on patients, review tracings for quality, and notify physicians of any serious abnormalities.
  • Respond to Codes.
  • Perform CLIA waived laboratory testing.
  • Clean laboratory glassware and centrifuges; prepare bleach for bench cleaning.
  • Monitor Sensoscientific temperature alarms, notifying technologists of deviations.

Salary Range: $18.18 - $22.00 hourly

Position Statement

The Laboratory Assistant performs the duties of a phlebotomist and is responsible for receiving orders, entering orders into the laboratory information system, collecting specimens, and providing appropriate customer information as needed. The Laboratory Assistant understands and follows strict protocols to ensure the safety and comfort of the patient, is knowledgeable about infection control practices, and adheres to established guidelines to prevent the transmission of diseases.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform basic assessment of patients and give instructions in the proper collection of specimens.
  • Accurately identify patients and label specimens correctly and clearly.
  • Independently collect blood by capillary and venipuncture with minimum physical and psychological discomfort to patient (newborn, pediatric, adult, and geriatric) in a variety of patient locations.
  • Function as laboratory receptionist by receiving test orders, answering the office phones, verifying accuracy of requested tests, and determining collection priority.
  • Process all types of body fluid and tissue specimens, assuring specimen quality and proper identification.
  • Perform EKGs on patients (newborn, pediatric, adult, and geriatric), review tracings for quality, and notify the requesting physician of any serious EKG abnormality.
  • Respond to Codes.
  • Perform CLIA waived laboratory testing.
  • Clean laboratory glassware and centrifuges and prepare bleach solution for bench cleaning.
  • Monitor Sensoscientific temperature alarms, notifying technologists of deviations from established tolerance limits.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Prior clerical experience, phlebotomy experience, medical terminology or EKG experience would be helpful but can be learned on the job.
  • Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized agency is highly recommended but can be accomplished after hire.
  • Basic computer entry or word processing skills required.
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
