Job Summary / Purpose

Works primarily in the lab specimen processing/intake department of the lab. Assist with specimen management and clerical duties as requested. May perform blood collection and specimen processing. If allowed by local/state regulations, may perform waived or moderate complexity testing, if appropriate for the department organization.

Key Responsibilities

1. Practices positive patient identification at all times.
2. Practices kindness and courtesy with all patient and co-worker interactions. Maintains good communication within the department and with other hospital departments.
3. Takes responsibility for the department workflow, assists team members, and fosters teamwork and collaboration.
4. Processes specimens into the lab, organized for department distribution, and moves processed samples quickly for testing.
5. Handles laboratory send-out testing, including processing, organizing, packing lists, and packaging for external testing.
6. Uses good judgment in problem solving and requests help when needed.
7. May perform phlebotomy, following blood collection procedures for all age groups, including blood bank collections.
8. May assist with phlebotomy training under supervision.
9. As permitted by regulations, performs CLIA waived and moderate complexity testing following procedures, evaluates, and releases results under supervision.
10. Performs routine maintenance on lab equipment and maintains records.
11. Monitors supply inventory and assists in stocking and reagent logs.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

• High School Diploma/GED

Required Certification and License

• Nevada: CLA:NV
• California: PHLEB:CA
• Washington: MAP:WA
• Other states: not required
• BLS-CPR within 90 days

Preferred Certifications

• Lab Assistant Program certification
• Phlebotomy program certificate

Preferred Experience

• 6 months experience in an acute care facility

Pay Range

$14.82 - $20.38 /hour
