Responsibilities
Job Summary / Purpose

Works primarily in the lab specimen processing/intake department of the lab. Assists with specimen management and clerical duties as requested. May perform blood collection and specimen processing. If allowed by local/state regulations, may perform waived or moderately complex testing, as appropriate for the department organization.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Practice positive patient identification at all times, in all job functions.
  2. Demonstrate kindness and courtesy with all patient and co-worker interactions. Establish and maintain good communication within the department and with other hospital departments.
  3. Take responsibility for the department workflow, assist all team members to maintain efficiency, and foster teamwork and collaboration.
  4. Process specimens into the lab, organize for department distribution, and move processed samples promptly for testing.
  5. Handle laboratory send-out testing, including processing, organizing, packing lists, and packaging for external laboratories according to procedures.
  6. Use good judgment when solving problems and request help when needed.
  7. May perform phlebotomy, following blood collection procedures, performing venous and capillary punctures on all age groups, including blood bank collections. Use appropriate techniques to obtain quality samples and adhere to volume requirements.
  8. Assist with phlebotomy training under supervisor or coordinator guidance.
  9. As permitted by local and state regulations, perform CLIA waived and moderately complex laboratory testing following written policies and procedures. Evaluate and release test results under the supervision of a Clinical Lab Scientist, considering quality control, instrument performance, specimen integrity, and prior results.
  10. Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment and maintain records as trained.
  11. Monitor department supply inventory, assist with stocking, and complete reagent logs.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

High School Diploma/GED

Required Certification and License

Nevada: CLA:NV

California: PHLEB:CA

Washington: MAP:WA

Other state license not required


All states:

BLS-CPR within 90 days

Preferred Certifications

Lab Assistant Program certification

Phlebotomy program certificate

Preferred Experience

6 months experience in an acute care facility
