Day hours with weekend rotations

The Laboratory Animal Technician will provide care for laboratory animals, maintain their environment, and keep records of their productivity and growth.

Key Accountabilities

1. Care for animals including feeding, watering, cleaning, grooming, breeding, and weaning, alongside routine welfare and environmental checks.
2. Clean, sanitize, and maintain animal cages, pens, rooms, and equipment.
3. Provide enrichment and socialize animals (for certain species).
4. Administer injections, medication, and collect health samples under veterinary guidance.
5. Follow strict biosecurity policies and disease prevention procedures.
6. Accurately collect and record data, update inventory databases.
7. Perform physical examinations and health checks, including sexing and weighing animals.
8. Promptly report any welfare concerns.
9. Receive animals, prepare and pack animals for delivery, and coordinate order details.
10. Ensure compliance with legislation and procedures including Animal Welfare Act, SOPs, EHS, and ISO standards.
11. Complete mandatory training to ensure role capability.
12. Time mating animals if applicable.
13. Apply identification methods such as microchipping, tattooing, ear notching, or leg rings.
14. Perform artificial insemination, blood collection, and other health sampling as directed.
15. Conduct hatch activities with extensive documentation if applicable.
16. Maintain records of animal history, develop radiographs, administer medications, monitor weight and size, and prepare tissue samples.
17. Prepare and process samples, anticoagulants, and blood products.
18. Collect biological tissues, including tissue biopsies for genotyping.
19. Provide weekend and holiday coverage as needed.
20. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Desire to work with, care for, and handle poultry daily.
• Attention to detail.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to interpret materials.
• Experience with GDP preferred.
• Availability to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
• Willingness to work overtime if needed.
• No contact with avian species outside of work.
• Positive immunity to MMR and Varicella.
• Ability to work in confined environments.
• Ability to follow sterile procedures and maintain clean, safe conditions.
• Capable of wearing PPE.

Preferences

• Experience handling animals, especially avian species.
• ALAT or related certification.
