Day hours with weekend rotations
The Laboratory Animal Technician will provide care for laboratory animals, maintain their environment, and keep records of their productivity and growth.
Key Accountabilities
- Care for animals including feeding, watering, cleaning, grooming, breeding, and weaning, alongside routine welfare and environmental checks.
- Clean, sanitize, and maintain animal cages, pens, rooms, and equipment.
- Provide enrichment and socialize animals (for certain species).
- Administer injections, medication, and collect health samples under veterinary guidance.
- Follow strict biosecurity policies and disease prevention procedures.
- Accurately collect and record data, update inventory databases.
- Perform physical examinations and health checks, including sexing and weighing animals.
- Promptly report any welfare concerns.
- Receive animals, prepare and pack animals for delivery, and coordinate order details.
- Ensure compliance with legislation and procedures including Animal Welfare Act, SOPs, EHS, and ISO standards.
- Complete mandatory training to ensure role capability.
- Time mating animals if applicable.
- Apply identification methods such as microchipping, tattooing, ear notching, or leg rings.
- Perform artificial insemination, blood collection, and other health sampling as directed.
- Conduct hatch activities with extensive documentation if applicable.
- Maintain records of animal history, develop radiographs, administer medications, monitor weight and size, and prepare tissue samples.
- Prepare and process samples, anticoagulants, and blood products.
- Collect biological tissues, including tissue biopsies for genotyping.
- Provide weekend and holiday coverage as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Desire to work with, care for, and handle poultry daily.
- Attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to interpret materials.
- Experience with GDP preferred.
- Availability to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
- Willingness to work overtime if needed.
- No contact with avian species outside of work.
- Positive immunity to MMR and Varicella.
- Ability to work in confined environments.
- Ability to follow sterile procedures and maintain clean, safe conditions.
- Capable of wearing PPE.
Preferences
- Experience handling animals, especially avian species.
- ALAT or related certification.
