Performs mechanical tests on products to determine if the metal and production quality meets the applicable specifications. Machines metal specimens for testing. Performs mechanical testing on prepared specimens.
CENTRAL LABORATORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receives various test specimens and either: A. Logs in and assigns laboratory test number or, B. Uses number previously assigned.
- Operates grinders, lathes, milling machines, saws, etc. to prepare ductile iron, steel, cast iron and other metals for mechanical testing. Records specimen dimensions on applicable forms.
- Performs Charpy Impact test, then calculates final test result using calculator and prescribed formula and records test result.
- Machines tensile and charpy specimens for testing, precision is required.
- Performs Brinell hardness test on all test specimens from #2 and #3 Ductile Iron Pipe, Steel and Iron Foundries.
- Uses CO2, liquid nitrogen and boiling water to test specimens for lowered or elevated temperature tests.
- Oils and maintains all equipment as prescribed.
- Communicates closely with Pipe Quality Technician and supervisor.
- Demonstrates knowledge of applicable ASTM & ANSI/AWWA standards.
STEEL PIPE PRODUCT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lines up coils at the entry to ensure proper testing of pipe.
- Checks and records the Seam Annealer's temperature for use in tests.
- Marks a specific pipe from a designated coil to cut a test sample from (cut by End Cropper Operator).
- Uses overhead crane and hand truck to pick up sample from Plasma/Double End Cropper Operator. (Personally responsible for cutting sample if Plasma/Double End Cropper fails to do so).
- Uses plasma torch to cut samples into smaller sections for various tests.
- Carries sample to the band saw and cuts off test rings for the following tests: a) Hardness Test b) Tensile Strap Test c) Reverse Bend Test.
- Uses micrometer to check the weld thickness of the sample.
- Uses cut-off saw to cut samples into strips for the Tensile test, Charpy Test, Hardness Test, Micro Analysis, and Chemical Analysis.
- Transports samples from coils of skelp to the lab for chemical analysis and tests.
- Compares Mechanical test results to the MCF for determination of acceptability to customer's specification.
- Works with math equations and use a calculator to make computations.
- Performs Lab equipment change over whenever the mill changes pipe sizes.
- Performs special testing for research projects as required.
- On a routine basis performs the following tests using well defined testing procedures: A) Charpy Test B) Yield Strength Test C) Tensile Test D) Micro Hardness Test E) Rockwell Hardness Test F)Drop Weight Tear Test G) Welder Flowline Analysis. Calculates and records the results of these tests. Precision is required when performing the tests.
- Uses band saw to samples for various tests.
- Performs microscopic examination of weld, and reads grain size.
- Prepares micros for upturned fibers, flow line analysis, weld line indications, etc.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.
- Performs work on both product lines. Rotates between product lines and workstations as production and business needs dictate. Performs work on several product lines including DIP, Steel Pipe, Research and various vendors.
- Follows all safety and job specific procedures.
- Adheres, supports, and strictly follows Company, quality, and environmental standards and directives while performing job duties for the protection of themselves and others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must exhibit the capability of learning to operate all machine tools required in performing the job.
- Must exhibit the ability to accurately record data.
- Must exhibit good oral and written communication skills (i.e., good command of grammar and spelling).
- Must exhibit the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, and common fractions, and decimal fractions.
- Must exhibit the ability to read and interpret measuring instruments such as micrometers.
- Must exhibit an ability to learn.
- Must exhibit a record of less than 4 attendance points.
- Must exhibit basic computer skills and basic typing skills.
- Must exhibit the ability to read and comprehend Manufacturing Control Forms (MCF) and basic specifications.
- Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing are required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
- Must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with others.
- Must be familiar with products, codes and processes.
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Must meet the physical requirements for safe operation of mobile equipment as administered by the Company.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior mechanical testing laboratory experience.
- Prior precision measurement tool experience.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
- Long periods of standing and walking are required while operating machinery, testing equipment, and operating grinders in order to prepare specimens for testing. Walking is required to access different areas within Laboratory and Research buildings. Walking is also essential to access various work areas within the Steel Pipe, DIP and Quality Assurance work areas.
- Stooping is required to perform various tests and to access supplies, samples and material. Also, it is required to get specimens from wheelbarrow, to lift wheelbarrow, and in order to operate impact wrench.
- Overhead reach is required to perform certain tests.
- Forward reach is required to operate lathe, testing equipment, milling machines, grinders, cut-off saw, etc. Also, forward reach is needed when recording results, and using calculator.
- Bended reach is essential to get specimens from wheelbarrow, operate lathe, perform certain tests, pick up samples and in order to clean out scrap bin.
- Handling specimens (Pipe specimens can measure up to 6 inches by 12 inches), samples, equipment controls, wheelbarrow, grinder, and various hand tools is required.
- Use of fingers is essential to write with pen or pencil, measure with micrometers, operate machine controls and handle samples.
- Feeling is essential in order to properly gauge specimens with a micrometer. Feeling needed to determine smoothness of sample.
- Sight is required in order to test samples, machine specimens, for safety, in order to determine test results, and in order to accomplish job responsibilities.
- Hearing is required for safety and communication.
- Lifting specimens weighing 1 pounds to 5 pounds on the average and a maximum of 10 pounds specimens is required in order to lift specimens on and/or off the machines. Also, lifting is required when using the wheelbarrow to carry samples.
- Carrying specimens (Weighing 1 pounds - 5 pounds on the average & maximum of 10 pounds) to grinder, lathe and different areas within the Steel Pipe, DIP or Quality Assurance work areas is required.
- Push/pull is required while operating testing equipment and pushing or pulling wheelbarrow.
