Job summary

MercyOne is seeking a Lab Assistant for the Des Moines metro area. The role supports specimen collection across age groups, processes samples, and maintains accurate LIS documentation within a collaborative hospital setting.

Full-time position with day shifts and 7:00 AM to 6:15 PM hours, supporting the MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center’s laboratory operations and patient care commitments. Competitive benefits and growth opportunities available.

Qualifications

Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

Responsibilities

Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age and ensures proper specimen collection.
Accepts specimens and requisitions and manages add-on orders and pending lists per procedures.
Identifies patients and specimens with two identifiers and labels containers accurately.
Registers and logs specimens in LIS and evaluates specimen adequacy and documentation.
Performs specimen processing and proper documentation per protocols.
Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
