Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, part of MercyOne Health System, seeks a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments. The role involves specimen collection, processing, and data entry to ensure timely and accurate test results for patient care.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, basic computer skills, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment. Day shift, full-time with 4–10 hour rotations and 6:30am–5:00pm / 7:00am–5:30pm windows are described.

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures and finger/heel sticks per age and policy.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions, manages add-ons.
• Identifies patients and specimens with two identifiers and labels containers.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS, evaluates adequacy and scans documentation.
• Performs specimen processing such as identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, slide preparation, and special handling.
• Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures and supports workflow efficiency.
• Operates laboratory information systems to support data entry and workflow management.
• Contributes to general laboratory operations by restocking supplies and participating in teaching.
