Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Laboratory is seeking a Lab Assistant to support multiple departments by assisting technical staff in the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of laboratory tests necessary for patient diagnosis and treatment. The role requires accuracy in handling specimens, patient information, and testing workflows to ensure timely turnaround and data integrity.

Qualifications

Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Strong computer skills and ability to learn new systems quickly.

Responsibilities

Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age.
Accepts specimens and requisitions and manages add-ons and pending lists.
Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers and labels containers.
Registers and logs specimens in the LIS and ensures documentation.
Performs specimen processing including identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, slide prep.
Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
Follows safety and infection control procedures and supports efficient workflows.
Operates LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
Restocks supplies and participates in teaching or committees.
