The University of Georgia is seeking an undergraduate student to assist in greenhouse research activities, including potting, planting, fertilizing, watering, weeding, pollinating, data collection and harvesting plants from different breeding populations.
Responsibilities include maintaining a neat greenhouse space, assisting with basic field and laboratory research, tissue sample collection, labeling field studies, and basic lab chores such as washing glassware, preparing solutions and waste
Selected applicant will provide assistance in greenhouse research activities including potting, planting, fertilizing, watering, weeding, pollinating, data collection, disease screening, and harvesting plants belonging to different breeding populations. Selected applicant will assist in keeping greenhouse space neat, orderly and weed free. Individual will provide assistance with basic field and laboratory research as requested including tissue sample collection, pollinations, basic data collection, disease screening, and setting up field studies including labeling and placing flags, stakes and markers. Individual will assist with basic lab protocols including molecular biology as requested and will be responsible for basic lab maintenance and chores including washing glassware, preparing simple solutions, preparing media, autoclaving supplies and waste, taking trash to dumpster, etc. to keep laboratory space neat, orderly and clean.
Undergraduate students with majors in plant biology, agricultural, crop and soil science; prior lab experience is preferred but not mandatory.
Basic knowledge about molecular biology and plant breeding would be desirable.
Lift up to 50 lbs. and withstand outside elements for extended periods of time. Driving.
