Job summary

Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, ME, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to perform waived and moderate complexity tests, collect specimens, and manage LIS documentation. You will ensure patient identification and accuracy while supporting clerical duties and maintaining clean work areas.

This role requires a High School Diploma, formal phlebotomy training, and three years of clinical lab experience. BLS within 45 days of hire is required; Phlebotomy Technician certification is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician preferred.
• BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current.
• Minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience required.

Responsibilities

• Perform and report waived tests following established procedures and manufacturer instructions.
• Perform and report moderate complexity testing limited to qualitative assays.
• Responsible for specimen collection, processing, accessioning, labeling, centrifugation, and specimen handling and transport.
• Ensure accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and LIS documentation.
• Perform computer entry, filing, and telephone communications.
• Demonstrate good telephone etiquette and greet patients and visitors politely.
• Possess good communication skills and knowledge of tests' terminology.
• Demonstrate phlebotomy knowledge and equipment use for all ages.
• Prepare specimens for send-out to a reference laboratory.
• Stock and order routine supplies; keep areas clean.
• Other tasks may be assigned by department manager/director.
