Job summary

Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, ME, is hiring a Laboratory Assistant to perform waived and moderate complexity tests, collect and process specimens, and maintain LIS documentation. You will ensure correct patient identification, proper handling of samples, and clear communication with the team.

Responsibilities include specimen preparation for send-outs, inventory and supply management, and adhering to CLIA-based protocols.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician preferred.
• BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current.
• Minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience required.

Responsibilities

• Perform and report results for waived testing following established procedures and manufacturer instructions.
• Perform and report results for moderate complexity tests limited to qualitative assays (e.g., rapid antigen tests, urine dipstick, pregnancy testing).
• Responsible for specimen collection, processing, accessioning, labeling, centrifugation, and specimen handling and transport.
• Ensure accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and documentation in the LIS.
• Perform computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrate good telephone etiquette and greet patients and visitors politely.
• Possess good communication skills.
• Demonstrate knowledge of test terminology ordered in the laboratory.
• Demonstrate working knowledge of phlebotomy and equipment for all ages.
• Prepare specimens for send-out to a reference laboratory.
• Stock and order routine supplies.
• Keep storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean.
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
