Job summary

Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, ME seeks a Laboratory Assistant to support the Pathology department. This full-time role (36 hours) involves clerical duties, specimen handling, and collaboration with licensed staff in processing diverse lab tests.

Responsibilities include telephone etiquette, patient greeting, specimen processing across microbiology, hematology, chemistry, and blood bank, and maintaining cleanliness and supply stocks in a supervised environment.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 1 year clinical laboratory experience preferred.
• State CPT I or CPT II certification if required by state.
• Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrates good telephone etiquette and is able to greet patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner.
• Possesses good communication skills.
• Demonstrates adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
• Demonstrates a good working knowledge of phlebotomy and the equipment used in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
• Processes pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
• Processes specimens for reference laboratory.
• Stocks and orders routine supplies.
• Keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean.
• Processes or places specimens on laboratory instruments in accordance with established policy and procedures.
• With proper documented training the laboratory assistant may perform instrument preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, assist in quality control procedures, perform primary culture inoculations, stain slide preparations, and subculture from liquid media.
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
