Job summary

Summit Pathology is seeking a Pathology Hospital Tech to join our growing team in Colorado. The role involves assisting with processing and preparation of surgical and cytology specimens, working closely with pathologists and hospital staff.

Hours are variable and rotate through hospitals and our main lab, with shifts typically from early morning to early evening. The position includes rotating through UCHealth and Banner facilities in Greeley, Loveland, and Fort Collins.

Qualifications

  • Education/experience: An earned associate degree (or higher) in a laboratory science obtained from an accredited institution. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and to effectively problem-solve issues.
  • Ability to organize work and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Assess specimen quality, make corrections, and prepare for processing.
  • Accession specimens into the LIS with data entry.
  • Demonstrates accuracy in identification and numbering of specimens.
  • Accurate filing and slide handling in the file room.
  • Rotate through hospital facilities and assist with procedures such as needle aspirations, CT biopsies, and endoscopy.
  • Assist with frozen sections from operating rooms and manage inventory.
  • Provide professional communication with hospital staff and triage calls.
  • Collaborate with team to complete lab duties and improve processes.

Summit Pathology

Is looking to add an enthusiastic team player to our fast – paced, growing pathology company, as a Pathology Hospital Tech. The hours for this position are variable, usually between 7:30a-5:00p in rotation through hospitals and 9:30a-7:00p in rotation through our main lab. This position will routinely rotate to UCHealth and Banner facilities within Northern Colorado including locations in Greeley, Loveland, and Fort Collins. This position will be posted until filled.

As a Hospital Tech you will work closely with Pathologists and hospital staff to provide exceptional care to patients through assisting with processing and preparation of surgical and cytology specimens.

We take pride in providing outstanding general surgical pathology as well as high level expertise in additional areas such as breast pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology (including flow cytometry), gastrointestinal pathology, dermatopathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology and clinical chemistry.

Responsibilities And Duties
  • Responsible for assessing specimen quality, making necessary corrections, and preparing the specimen for processing or grossing
  • Responsible for accessioning specimens into the supported LIS system. Data entry.
  • Demonstrates absolute accuracy in the identification and accessioning of numbers and names.
  • Accurate quality control of requisitions
  • Accurate filing of blocks and slides daily and maintenance of the slide file room
  • Rotate through various hospital facilities and become accustomed to all areas of the hospital
  • Assist on routine needle procedures including fine needle aspirations, CT biopsies, and endoscopy procedures. Responsible for slide preparation and staining
  • Assist with frozen section specimens from the operating rooms
  • Handle inventory, upkeep, and organization of the offsite gross rooms
  • Routinely interacts with hospital staff and/or answers and triages phone calls. Must demonstrate positive customer interactions and proper phone etiquette
  • Works and communicates cooperatively with team members to identify and complete lab responsibilities and meet department goals.
  • Participates in department activities to improve patient care/lab systems, shares new information with all team members, attends team meetings and effectively orients/mentors new staff as requested.
  • Follows all procedures and policies and demonstrates competency and proficiency as required.
  • Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/removes unsafe equipment and attends safety education sessions.
  • In addition to the responsibilities described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based upon Summit Pathology needs or requirements.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
  • Education/experience: An earned associate degree (or higher) in a laboratory science obtained from an accredited institution. Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Ability to maintain necessary level of confidentiality to protect patient privacy.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Competency and accuracy using multiple computer systems
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, including medical terminology
  • Previous data entry or laboratory/healthcare experience preferred
